Zoroastrian Silk Textile, Central Persia, late 19th century, 4'2" 1'10", $1650

These textiles of this type are known to originate from Central Persia and thought to be made followers of the Zoroastrian religion. Rare and unusual as they are, they are extremely modern in the sense that they employ an aesthetic that verges on the modern art look. Composed of vertical stripes of multi colored silk, with each band featuring embroidered embellishments, small floral elements.

The region of central Persia is dominated by the holy city of Yazd. Yazd is famous for its many religious buildings, and has been referred to as "Home of Piety". Its importance as a religious centre dates back to times before the arrival of Islam. The Friday Mosque has one of the high estminarets of Iran. Yazd is characteristic for its many wind towers, anecessity with the high summer temperatures out here between the deserts. One interesting feature of the city structures is the network of tunnels to carry water from the Shir Khu Mountain. Yazd is today the last centre of Zoroastrianism of some size. About aquarter, or 12,000 Zoroastrians live here, and maintain a number of religious buildings like the Ateshkade, a fire temple said to have kept a sacred flame burning for about 1,500 years. The Tower of Silence (for burial) out of town is no longer in use.
