Yomud Turkmen Main Carpet, 19th century, 6'3" x 10'4", $9500 |
| The main carpets of the Turkmen are thought by some to be the reliquaries of ancient ornaments, important relics of the material culture of the Turkmen maintained over centuries within the format of these large rugs made for the use of the khans or other tribal leaders on special occasions. The pristine condtition in which this rug has been preserved suggests special usage as well. Commonly known as the "dyrnak gol" pattern, this rug incorporates features that are often associated with older pieces. Note the changes in the borders in the top and bottom ends as compared with the border motifs on the sides. The differences in the full pile elems ornamentation also suggest an earlier period. While I do not date this rug any earlier than the 3rd quarter of the 19th century, it is wonderful to see the vestiges of antiquity incorporated in the composite elements seen here. |

COLORS -- All natural dyes
CONDITION -- Excellent, with no holes, no stains, no repair, original selvedges, good pile. This is an antique textile therefore it cannot be expected that it will be in "new condition". The terms used for describing condition are consistent with common usage in the marketplaces all over the world. Obvious flaws including repair, holes and stains WILL BE noted in all descriptions.
